Summer Events

So summer is here (apparently) and Horses on Screen is here to let you know of any upcoming events that might be of interest. If you have any information of an event that you think readers might be interested in, please get in contact – josie@horsesonscreen.com – so that we can advertise it.

On Saturday 23rd July the Mid Devon show is held in Tiverton (www.middevonshow.co.uk) where the Rockin’ Horse Stunt Team is performing. This will be a chance to see some of the best trick riders in the country performing.

On August 3rd and 4th, the Grand Medieval Joust returns to Pendennis castle. This is a great day out with a chance to see the jousting team going head to head. There is also usually the chance to chat with the team in between their displays too. The days run from 11am to 5pm and you can pre-book tickets at http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/events/a-grand-medieval-joust-pc-3-Jan/

A Weekend with Janet Rogers

A couple of weeks have passed now since five of us made the trek to Eton for the ‘Warhorse’ workshop. The weekend, organised by RC Annie, was based at Janet Rogers yard. Janet has a lifetime of experiences working with horses in the media and I think I can speak for all of us who went when I say we very much enjoyed looking through all her photos! She has worked with top actors such as Sean Connery, Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington, Kenneth Brannagh and Keanu Reeves.

Despite some stormy weather, we managed to stay dry during the days. We spent the weekend with a diverse group – from horsey people like ourselves to those who had never sat on a horse before! The progression that everyone made was fantastic.

We were all paired up with a horse and set about learning a few new skills. Practising some sword play from horseback and picking up hoops whilst charging down the school – all really good fun!

We all enjoyed the chance to do something different for a weekend and also taking the opportunity to chat to Janet about her work in the industry. It was a fantastic weekend and I look forward to finding similar opportunities for us all in the future.

Have Your Say

One of the main aims for Horses on Screen is to provide a facility for the equestrian community. Therefore we would love to hear your opinions; from the skills you’d like to learn to the skills you already have to things you’d like to see and anything you can think of!

Horses on Screen is here to be shaped by you, for you so please don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us know you’re thoughts.

September Newsletter

What’s been going on?

It probably doesn’t seem like much has been going on in the last month, but I’ve been busy trying to build things up so we’re ready to spring into action!

Horses on Screen now has it’s own logo thanks to James at Collaborative Thought who worked very hard on getting it done. So now Horses on Screen can start creating a strong identity wherever it goes! I am now looking into the development of banners for events and also flags. It would be nice to parade these from horseback.

So, what else has happened?

I have a lot of trainers interested in getting involved. The team from RC-Annie (www.rc-annie.com), who are fight choreographers for media, are looking to get involved and I will hopefully get a workshop weekend organised for before Christmas. This will be a sort of stage combat workshop, hopefully working on stage fighting skills, hand-to-hand and sword skills, possibly mounted combat and the basics of choreographing fights for the screen.

I am still hopeful to start jousting workshops in the near future but really need to know primarily who would be interested in learning these skills. I have had some response but could do with a few more before I take it forwards.

Falmouth University

I returned to my University this week to meet with the head of the Film course Kingsley Marshall. It was very nostalgic being back on the campus and I was quite shocked to still be remembered (I’m hoping it was for the right reasons!).

Kingsley was very interested to hear about Horses on Screen and I plan to offer our services to the students of various courses at the University.

I think this will be a fantastic opportunity for us to get some experience working with film crews in a slightly less pressured atmosphere. It will also give us some free publicity as many student films are entered in film festivals across the country. In exchange, we will be giving students experience in working with animals and outside companies on productions, and be giving them more possibilities for their films – rather than just the usual student zombie films!

I will be attending the University on October 27th as a guest lecturer to talk about Horses on Screen and hopefully whip up some enthusiasm.

I have also been invited there after Christmas for a further lecture. Another ex-student from Falmouth is now working alongside Simon Atherton who is one of the top armourers in the country, working on films such as Clash of the Titans, Robin Hood and Warhorse. He will be travelling down for a lecture and I am inviting Dylan Jones who runs Dolbadarn Film Horses (www.filmhorses.co.uk) who I trained with to come down too.

I hope that if Dylan can attend then we can prolong his stay to include a weekend workshop for everyone involved in Horses on Screen. Dylan has also worked on Robin Hood and Warhorse and also the last few series of the BBC’s Merlin. This will be a fantastic opportunity to talk with someone who has worked alongside the world’s biggest directors providing horses for major productions.

Membership

Membership is now open. To become a member of Horses on Screen you need to visit the ‘Join Up’ page, download and fill in the appropriate forms and send them back to me. Membership fees are annual and go towards the costs of running HOS such as design, printing, advertising and so on. The baseball caps and optional polo shirts are in the process of being sorted, I am currently sourcing companies to give a good rate on embroidery for me.

Members will have priority at all events and I expect to be able to subsidise training fees for them starting very soon.

Funding

I am still investigating funding and the recent survey sent out is part of the process. I am working to put together a business plan that can then be passed on to potential investors in the hope of securing some money to help us on our way.

Rexon Stud Workshop

Interest for the workshop has been very positive and places are starting to be taken up. If you have shown interest or are considering joining us for the day,  please get your payments sent in to reserve your space. For more information visit the Events page.

I would like to continue to thank everyone who has shown support for Horses on Screen and encourage you all to continue to spread the word.

Horses on Screen Survey

I appreciate everyone has much more important things to do, but if you get a chance to fill in the survey by clicking on the link below and emailing it to josie@horsesonscreen.com it really will make a difference.

The information from the survey will go towards building a business plan which in turn will hopefully help to secure funding for Horses on Screen.

Survey

If you would like the survey in a different format (it is currently in a word document) please just let me know.

Thank you!
